Senna
Botanical Name: Senna alexandrina (also known as Cassia angustifolia)
🌍 Where It’s Grown
Senna is native to North Africa, especially Egypt and Sudan, and has long been cultivated in the Nile River region.
Today it is also grown in India, Pakistan, and parts of the Middle East.
Senna thrives in hot, arid climates and is typically cultivated, though some wild stands still exist in desert regions.
🌿 Benefits

🔥 Hot Brew or ❄️ Cold Brew?
Hot Brew (recommended):
-
1 tsp dried Senna leaf
-
8 oz hot water
-
Steep 5–10 minutes max
-
Longer steep = stronger effect
-
Drink as needed (not for daily use)
Cold Brew:
Not recommended — cold water extraction can cause stronger cramping and unpredictable potency.
🍯 Flavor Pairings / What to Add
Senna is bitter on its own, so pairing is important.
Pairs well with:
-
Ginger (reduces cramping)
-
Peppermint or Spearmint (improves taste + soothes digestion)
-
Chamomile (gentle, calming synergy)
-
Fennel (supports the bowels + eases discomfort)
-
Honey to soften bitterness
Energetically, pair Senna with herbs that ease the body and support gentle flow.
🌬 Can It Be Smoked in an Herbal Cigarette?
No.
Senna should never be smoked.
The herb is harsh and potentially irritating to the lungs when burned and is only appropriate for internal infusion.
